RE:
Here is a comment left on my last post from an anonymous reader:
"Though I agree with almost all of your points, I disagree with your position on the separation of church and state. This country was founded on protestant principles and although the church has no hold on the state anymore or education, that doesn't mean that our president can't voice his opinion on his personal christian beliefs (1st amendment right)to put his personal spin on things, or that putting a hand on the bible is enforcing religion more than merely exercising tradition... GW is a quack though, our situation is F'd up. I will give you that... I think Americans have gradually lost their voice. Now if you could take your post and lobby it..."
I'll respond:
This country was founded by protestants. They're beliefs certainly invaded some of the things they did. But The Bill of Rights is a document free of any mention of God or religion, aside from the obvious, that it protects the freedom of and from. The principles outlined in The Bill of Rights are democratic; they are indicitive of no religion. They limit the power of the government. That is their purpose. Now whether or not law makers have abided by those things throughout history is a whole other discussion.
President Bush can discuss religion all he wants, as Mr. George W. Bush, Jr., but not as President George W. Bush. When he is addressing the nation as The President of the United States, he is representing the office of the president and the executive branch of the government. In this context he should not say anything recognizing a religion. If he does, it implies that the office of the president is recognizing this religion and is therefor unconstitutional.
And as far as swearing an oath on the Bible being just practicing tradition, well who says all traditions are correct? It was traditional for white people to own slaves in the civil war era and before. It's a good thing someone recognized the wrongs in that tradition. Traditions are not always good, right, or legal. This one, swearing an oath on a Bible in a government sanctioned event, happens to be unconstitutional because it implies that the government is recognizing Christianity as its official religion. God forbid that from ever happening, please. If the Bible is important enough to swear to the truth on, then why would someone watching the ceremony not think that the government's official religion is Christianity?
Americans have lost their voice, Anonymous Poster, you and I agree on this. And it's really sad. We need more journalists who are willing to write the truth and more editors and newspapers who are brave enough to print the truth about things that are going on. Sometimes I feel we respect authority too much. How much did our founding fathers respect it? They said fuck you and went across the ocean to start their own country. We need to say fuck you to the government sometimes to let them know that they can't pull the shit they pull sometimes. How do we do that? Certianly NOT by standing the corner of some random street with a sign that says, "No More War." Who gives a shit about that? It's a useless, futile, worthless effort to do something. Saying Fuck You to the government needs to be done by the masses writing well written letters to our representives. The masses need to vote out the fuckers who misrepresent us. We don't have legal term limits for the Senate or the House of Reps, but we do have term limits, they're called elections (I borrowed that from The West Wing). And America really fucked up the last one.
Deets for the House of Representitives in 2014, gotta start somewhere. Now if I can only get myself to run as a Democrat without feeling guilty, maybe I'll get some votes. People aren't too big on Libertarians yet, except for that they really are and just don't know it. People who really want true freedom and liberty in its purest form and of its purest definition need to investigate the Libertarian party. The Democrats and Republicans are just Right Wing Socialists.
Until The Next.
I love and appreciate comments, but leave a name!

General Bush of God's Army
To the American People: What do you not understand about SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE?!? Get outraged at this! Her nomination should be thrown out immediately, for about 37 reasons.
Bush is a fucking raving Christian in the Oval Office and he is ruining the democracy he claims to be proliferating.
Did you know that the elected president of Iraq will not shake hands with women? Yet GWB claims to be having success spreading his idea of freedom.
First of all, you don't spread freedom. The act of trying to do so is called imperialism and that is something that is done very much not in the spirit of freedom, as Americans like to think of it.
Freedom is a word that has lost its definition. The administration has created a skewed connotation of this sacred word for American's to believe. And too much of America is buying it.
Americans are afraid to voice an opposition opinion to anything with the words "Patriot," "Freedom," "Terror," "Liberty," or "American" in it.
The Patriot Act gave government unconstitutional powers, but Americans bought it and Senators voted for it because who wants to be the guy who voted against something called The Patriot Act?, no matter how fucked up the whole law is.
We need more free thinking people to step up and alert the public about how the government is numbing our minds, not just that they are doing it. People NEED to know HOW they are doing it so that they can recognize it in the future.
Pay attention to the language these guys use. Half of the time when Bush is talking about freedome and liberty and terror, his sentences are basically meaningless. Pick apart the language the next time you hear him speak, really pay attention to how he is using each of those words. Pay attention to what comes immediately before and after them.
Speech writers are very good at hiding messages and information and at making bad things look good. So it takes careful, analytic listening to decode the bullshit they are sending our way.
Back to Separation of Church and State:
Separation of Church and State is one of the two or three most important elements of the constitution. The Framers crossed the Atlantic to escape religious prosecution. Separation of the Church and State is the reason people came here. It is the reason we have America today!
The church and religion are connected today. I don't know when it first happened. I don't know why. I don't know how people let it happen. But it's nauseating, disgusting, and mind-boggling.
George W. Bush is trying to tighten that connection. Their is an abundance of evidence to support this, most recently his most recent nomination to The Supreme Court. I take offense to that fact that Bush would take religion in to consideration when nominating someone to The Bench, the highest court in the land, the one that is to protect the constitution, to keep religion and government separate. It's insulting to America, Americans, The Framers, and our history.
Was anyone else outraged when John Roberts had his hand on The Bible while being sworn in? Here is a man who is about to be Chief Justice of The Supreme Court, a man who is supposed to keep the constitution sacred, a man is to protect the constitution and all its elements, inlcuding separation of church and state, and he has his fucking hand on a Bible, which obviously shows that the government is acknowledging a religion, which is unconstitutional. Astonishing.
The Hypocracy of it all!
We are blind.
We will cause our own downfall.
I give our democracy as it is today a life expectancy of no more than 25 more years. Bleak? You bet. Honest? Yes. Americans are going to vote themselves into the shitter. But hey, 254 years will be a pretty good run at that point. Most governments do not last that long. We are on the decline heading into a socialist hell.
Hopefully the Free Nation of Deets will be up and running in about 15-20 years. I'm scouting locations right now. You are all welcome to be charter citizens. Leave your books on Marx and Lenin at home. Bring some anarchy; it'll be a party.
But seriously, get pissed at this shit. It really matters.
Does anyone else want to puke every time you hear Bush say, "God Bless America!"?
Until The Next.

The Short and Long of Harriet Miers
The rest of that article sounds like shady tabloid rumor spreading, but the point is made.
She will never be confirmed. Her confirmation process might not even get as far as a vote.
Another PR victory for GWB is in the process.
That's the short and long of it.
Next nominee, please.

Don't Quote Me
I didn't get a playoff prediction up on The Blog in time, but here is the one I e-mailed to The Connection.
Well, not too bad. I could not have been more wrong about the Red Sox, getting swept by the White Sox and not even having Schilling see any action has to be embarrassing.
Today's 18 inning marathon in Houston was fucking absurd. At one point in the 17th inning, the stalemate had Adam saying, "The game's a wash, let's finish it tomorrow." But that is baseball at its finest. I would say it was a couple teams fighting tooth and nail to win the game, but I think at about inning 16 it became a couple really tired teams hoping not to loose. That is until Clemens came in and shut the door on Atlanta's chances. It would have been interesting though had Burke not hit that home run in the bottom of the 18th to see what would have happened when Clemens had gone as far as he could have. Then what? Position player on the hill and Clemens in the field, I guess. I want to see that one day, have a team's pitching staff so desimated that a pitcher has to be relieved by an outfielder and the pitcher goes to play right field. The Twins were very close to putting Dan Gladden in to pitch in the 1991 World Series. Connection to the Twins in this year's post season? Gary Gaetti is Houston's hitting coach. Gaetti. He was great until he found God. Not kidding either, read it in Tom Kelly's book about that season.
There's an interesting link to one of The Sports Guys throwback columns up on his website. It's about choosing a quote for your high school yearbook. Then he lists a bunch of his favorite quotes.
Here are some of my thoughts on quotes (sorry if this offends you or insults your AIM profile):
1) Inspirational quotes are really fucking cheesey.
2) The only useful quotes are either funny or really clever.
3) The Bible is a horrible source.
I don't think we had yearbook quotes in my high school, but we did have a senior edition of the school's newspaper where seniors could submit quotes. The only one I remember that I had in there was "Skip half days of school so you can still go to practice that day." That was something I practiced far too much my senior year. See my 8 page attendance print out. If you look on my facebook profile, my only quote is "Inspirational quotes suck." Of course, attributed to myself.
Quotes like that whole thing about dancing like nobody is watching or ones about feeling good about yourself or ones about love and how complicated it is are just annoying. They come a dime a dozen and offer you nothing new, nothing to hold on to and reflect on. When you read or hear those, you'll probably just nod your head and say, "Yeah."
I also think that the phrase "the real world" should be banned from all graduation speeches everywhere.
Anway, here is my shoutout, I hate that phrase too, makes me feel like I'm a 15 year old girl on TRL yelling a bunch of shit that no one can hear and that no one gives a shit about, but anyway, here is my shoutout to Derek Breidenbach, loyal reader and uber ladies man at UMD. Derek, give me something quoteworthy for the blog.
Lots more to write about. Lots. But it's 3:00 a.m.
Until The Next.
